With women’s sport largely ignored, British Born Australian Laura Youngson decided to tackle things from a different angle (so to speak).

Youngson founded Equal Playing Fields (EPF), which is a grassroots set to highlight gender inequality in sport, and promote girls and women for sporting development.

EPF organised 40 women from 20 countries to play the highs and lows of Kilimanjaro & Jordan. They began up high (at 5,714m above sea level) in a field of volcanic ash and thin air, with the two teams competing in the highest altitude football match ever to be played.

Last week, another team played a FIFA accredited game on a purpose-built pitch 6,000m lower at the Dead Sea in Jordan.

Youngson hopes to highlight the physical and logistic demands of the trip as raising awareness over gender imbalances in sport at all levels. Football projects have been established from Azerbaijan to Mozambique, countries where there are huge challenges to female participation.
